Alaska Air Cargo Delivers Season's First Copper River Salmon to Seattle

SEATTLE, May 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Alaska Air Cargo delivered the season’s first shipment of Copper River salmon today to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The arrival of Copper River salmon marks the start of the summer salmon season and is anticipated by seafood lovers throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The Alaska Airlines plane arrived early this morning with Copper River king and sockeye salmon from three seafood processors: Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Trident Seafoods and Copper River Seafoods. At least three more Alaska Airlines flights today will transport salmon from Cordova, Alaska, to Anchorage, Alaska, Seattle and across the United States.

Alaska Airlines plays a significant role in supporting the Alaska seafood industry, which is recognized worldwide for its sustainable fishing practices. The carrier flew nearly 25 million pounds of fresh Alaska seafood to the Lower 48 states and beyond last year, including nearly 1.8 million pounds of Copper River salmon.

“We’re proud to be the first to bring wild and sustainable Copper River salmon to seafood lovers across the country, in many cases within 24 hours after the fish is caught,” said Torque Zubeck, managing director of Alaska Air Cargo. “With enhanced food quality procedures and additional flights to support the Alaska seafood industry, we are going the extra mile to deliver seafood that’s as fresh as possible.”

Copper Chef Cook-off
Following the arrival of the first fish, three top Seattle chefs will compete to create the best salmon recipe in Alaska Air Cargo’s “Copper Chef Cook-off.” Pat Donahue, executive chef of Anthony’s Restaurants and the 2010 and 2011 Copper Chef winner, will compete against executive chefs Jason Wilson of CRUSH and Wayne A. Johnson of Ray’s Boathouse. The chefs will have 30 minutes to prepare and serve the first catch of the season to a panel of judges, including Jay Buhner, Seattle Mariners Hall of Famer; Joanne Dunham, co-owner of Dunham Cellars; Gary Horner, senior winemaker at Erath Winery; and Bill Ayer, chairman of Alaska Air Group.

To showcase the versatility of Copper River salmon, two Northwest wines, an Oregon pinot noir from Erath and a Washington chardonnay from Dunham Cellars, have been selected to pair with the salmon in this year’s cook-off. The wines were selected for their flavor-enhancing profiles that blend well with salmon and break the old adage that fish only pairs with white wine.

The airline will use its Twitter account, @AlaskaAir, to announce the winning Copper River salmon recipe. The three recipes that will be prepared for the Copper Chef Cook-off are available to download at http://bit.ly/JNOHmK .

Enhanced seafood quality training program
Copper River salmon shipped on Alaska Air Cargo this season will arrive as fresh as possible to grocery stores and restaurants across the nation, thanks in part to a cool chain training program required of all airline employees who handle perishables. Alaska Air Cargo employees are required to adhere to strict seafood quality standards and pass an annual food quality course.

Seafood processors and shippers follow these cool-chain standards to provide a temperature-controlled environment for proper food handling. The goal is to keep seafood moving rapidly throughout its journey on Alaska Airlines and maintain a consistent temperature range from the time it leaves the water to when it arrives at stores and restaurants.

Note to media: High-resolution photographs of the season’s first Copper River salmon and Alaska Air Cargo’s “Copper Chef Cook-off” will be posted in the airline’s online newsroom image gallery at www.alaskaair.com/newsroom by noon Pacific time, May 18, 2012.

Together with sister carrier Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines transports more than 115 million pounds of cargo annually, including seafood, mail and freight, and operates the most extensive air cargo operation on the U.S. West Coast of any passenger airline.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group (ALK), together serve more than 90 cities through an expansive network in Alaska, the Lower 48, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. As previously announced, the m/v “Philadelphia” is chartered to EDF Trading Ltd., London, at a gross rate of US$18,000 per day, minus a 5% commission paid to third parties, for a minimum forty-four (44) to a maximum fifty (50) month period. The charter commenced yesterday.

The Company also announced that today, through one of its wholly owned subsidiaries, it has completed the drawdown of US$34.65 million from its previously announced loan facility of US$82.6 million with The Export-Import Bank of China (“China Eximbank”) having a majority interest and DNB Bank ASA as agent. The Best Online Parcel Delivery Service?

When it comes to getting an online quote for shipping a parcel to Europe or the rest of the World, online websites often make claims to offer an online quotation service, but when looked at in further detail, the courier’s idea of providing an online quote is for customers to email the company, where the order details can then be followed up. This is hardly an online quotation service.

Belvedere, Kent (PRWEB UK) 15 May 2012

When it comes to getting an online quote for shipping a parcel to Europe or the rest of the World, online websites often make claims to offer an online quotation service, but when looked at in further detail, the courier’s idea of providing an online quote is for customers to email the company, where the order details can then be followed up. This is hardly an online quotation service.

More often than not, customers require a shipping quote instantaneously, rather than in a hour or so time, or whenever the courier is next able to respond.

Well Worldwide Parcel Serviceshttp://www.worldwide-parcelservices.co.uk – are pleased to announce an instant online quotation service in real time, with no waiting around for someone to call back. Just the size and weight details of the parcel, along with the destination address, is all that’s required to get an instant quote. As the name suggests, this service is offered for shipping to all Worldwide destinations.

The online service is called “Quick quote” and has been designed to provide a shipping quote as fast as possible. Speed is of huge importance especially when considering the pressures that shipping departments can come under, where a requirement to ship a customer’s parcel can come out of nowhere and need shipping like it was yesterday.

However the system has not only been designed to provide the quickest method of parcel delivery, but also to make the entire booking process just as fast. After all, there is no point in getting an instant shipping quote if it then takes a further ten minutes to go about booking a collection.

Time is often regarded as money, and so the online quote service is designed to make things as simple as possible. A booking only takes a couple of minutes, so a customer can place an order and get back to the day job as soon as possible.

Worldwide Parcel Services don’t just provide a quick quote, however. The courier also provides customers with a wide variety of options including estimated shipping times against them. The service also shows which carrier will be used to ship each parcel. This may be looked at as being a little odd, but as courier services are bought in bulk and therefore discounts are provided, Worldwide Parcel Services can know as a result which service will provide the best rates which even the courier themselves will not be able to achieve.

All prices include a free £50 worth of insurance, and further insurance up to £1,000 can be added with just one click of the mouse. This means customers can specify the amount of cover they require for the package, and don’t pay above the odds for cover they don’t need.

Furthermore, once the order is placed, it can be tracked easily online using the website’s parcel tracking system. Each order is provided with a tracking number, which provides the location and history of each parcel in a matter of seconds.

It is for all of the above reasons that Worldwide Parcels offer online parcel service which is a step above the competition, so why not find out more today?

DHL Express launches next day Hong Kong to US service

DHL Express has opened a new international service centre in Hong Kong, and has also launched a new Hong Kong to US time definite delivery service.

The company has invested HKD $34.7m ($4.4m USD) in the new 4,500 square metre Tsing Yi Service Cetnre, calling it a significant addition to its Hong Kong infrastructure.

DHL will consolidate shipments from across Hong Kong at the facility before they are sent to the DHL Central Asia Hub for onward transit to more than 220 countries and territories in the DHL global network.

With advanced technology and streamlined processes, DHL said the new facility would have an outbound capacity of around 110 tons per day, and an inbound capacity of about 50 tons per day.

Ken Lee, the managing director at DHL Express Hong Kong, said the site’s proximity to the airport and local transport connections meant Tsing Yi was the ideal location.

“This significant investment not only shows our continued confidence in Hong Kong’s potential for growth, but also underlines our commitment to helping customers connect to the world,” said Lee.

DHL Express has been ramping up its Asian intercontinental services in recent months, with a new Boeing 777 round-the-world flight from Germany to Hong Kong to Los Angeles launched in March.

The new flight has allowed the company to start up a new DHL Express 10:30 service from Hong Kong to the United States, offering one-day door-to-door delivery with a money-back guarantee in the event of a shipment delay.

The service will delivery customers’ shipments by 10.30am on the next business day for all major US business centres.

Lee said: “This new service shows our persistent dedication to being the industry’s international specialist, as well as our unceasing commitment to improving our service and responding to customers’ developing needs.”

FedEx Express to add 87 more electric vehicles to fleet

FedEx will add to its electric vehicle fleet, bringing the total to 130 trucks.

FedEx Express announced that its vehicle fleet is more than 16 percent more fuel efficient, well ahead of the pace needed to reach its goal of making its vehicles 20 percent more efficient by 2020.

“We have achieved 80 percent of our vehicle fuel efficiency goal as of the conclusion of fiscal year 2011, compared to our original baseline set in 2005,” said Mitch Jackson, staff vice president of environmental affairs and sustainability, with FedEx Corp. “As a result, we are reevaluating our 2020 goal to potentially raise the standard we originally set out to achieve.”

Fedex Express is adding 87 electric vehicles to its fleet, raising the number of all-electric vehicles to 130.

The new all-electric vehicles are being deployed in California, Texas, New York City and Rockville, Md., as well as various locations in Asia and Europe. Last summer, FedEx deployed a group of 24 all-electric vehicles in Memphis, Chicago and New York City.
